I’ve been working so hard to get little man’s nursery all ready to go. We just moved into our new house over Labor Day weekend. At 34 weeks pregnant that was no small feat! With some of the pregnancy complications I’ve had, he could come at any time so there was no time to waste. Our new house is only two bedrooms at the moment. We plan on adding on another bedroom next spring/summer but for now little man will be sharing a room with us. Luckily the master is fairly good sized. His small space nursery includes all the essential areas – sleeping, eating, and changing.
I focused most of my energy into creating the perfect diaper changing station. I know you’ll hear some moms say that these are a waste of time. Not for us though! We still utilize a changing station with our 2.5 year old. It’s so nice to have everything in one spot and easily accessible.
For this changing station I picked up a $10 Jenny Lind style changing table on a local garage sale site. Total score! It was in pretty good shape to begin with but it needed to be sanded and re-stained. Much to my husband’s dismay it went from being brown to brown! In my defense it was an ugly chocolate brown, like cheap furniture brown. After my husband spent way too many hours sanding it, I threw a couple coats of Minwax stain in Jacobean on it (again no small feat for a pregnant lady!). I think it looks so much richer now.
I added 3 small baskets to the top and 3 larger baskets to the bottom for holding all the baby necessities. The small baskets store socks & hats, changing pad covers, extra Playtex® Diaper Genie® Refills, and receiving blankets. The bottom baskets have plain onesies & pants, extra diapering items, and toys & teething items.
Next to our diaper changing station sits one of my favorite baby items ever! The Playtex Baby™ Diaper Genie® Complete. Again some moms will tell you this is not a necessity. Just wait until you’re changing your 12th poopy diaper for the day though! Diaper Genie pails are equipped with the Odor Lock System, sealing in germs and all those odors, so your nursery won’t smell of dirty diapers. Did you know the average baby will go through 9,600 dirty diapers in their first three years? That is a lot of smelly diapers! Each Diaper Genie Refill holds up to 270 newborn diapers. During Target’s Baby Sale you can buy one Playtex® Diaper Genie® Pail and Receive a $5 Target GiftCard™ 9/10-9/15!
One of the best ways I found to utilize space was to hang a couple shelves above the changing area. I picked up these shelves in an almost exact color to the changing table. They add a little something special because of the gold accents. I put a couple stacks of diapers, a pack of baby wipes and a cute pair of tiny shoes on the first shelf. I’m still working on decorating the second. I wanted to have diapers and wipes within arms reach and not below just to make diaper changes easier. Those late night changes are hard enough as it is!
To the right of the diaper changing station is a bassinet, glider/recliner and small table. I stuck with a neutral color scheme since the nursery is in our master bedroom. I’m drawn to whites, browns and grays for small areas. This glider was our biggest splurge but I’m so glad we did. The glider I had with my daughter was too small. My head bobbed around and there was no neck support. This is the perfect size even for a small space! I added the small table next to it for my phone, a glass of water and a snack for those late night feedings.
I think I covered all the basics and we are ready to meet our little guy! Is there anything I’m missing? I did take over half of my husband’s closet for hanging all his clothes and storing some extra items. Sorry hubby!
